STORIES FROM OUR LIFE SISTERS
CONTINUING THE PROFESSIONAL CONNECTION FOR WOMEN …CELEBRATORY LIFE LEGENDS IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES, DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION & PARKS
by Sue McElvouge 2012…
I retired from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, after working fulltime for 30 years in 2005. I currently work part-time at the Simi Valley Senior Senior, job sharing with my two dear friends Karen and Stan Kalsman. I enjoy working with the Seniors (as I am one of them!). Recently, we just completed four weeks of Senior Olympics, our Community Games, with over 400 seniors participating .
When I am not working I do volunteer work. I also went through Docent Training at a Historical Park in Simi Valley and now give guided tours of the Historical Park, The Strathearn House, once a month. And, of course, I am still an active member of Chi Kappa Rho, Alpha Chapter.
When I am not doing all of the above, I do travels with my friends. Cruising is one of the things that I love doing and can do forever! On Mondays, retirees of Recreation and Parks and, still working employees, have lunch or as several people say, our “therapy” session.
While working for Recreation and Parks, I had the great honor of meeting several other Recreation Directors and we have become best friends over the years; Ann and Steve Vollmer, and Karen and Stan Kalsman. I also married a Recreation Director who is my best friend, Joe. After I retired I continued to be the Treasurer of Chi Kappa Rho for another year. I was the Chairperson for one of the major events our Club sponsored. I attend as many events that I can and I look forward to seeing our members.
I would say that the more you get involved with WILS the more benefits you reap. Friendships are formed and networking is a natural process that occurs during our meetings and events. You can get great advice and resources from the senior members of the Club from their years of experience or from any member, actually.
